What Are The Key Characteristics Of Sheet Metal Manufacturing?

Understanding of Sheet Metal Manufacturing

Sheet metal manufacturing is the process of cutting or shaping metal plates, profiles, and pipes without changing their cross-sectional features, and then installing them with methods such as welding, riveting, and bolt connection to create metal components required, mainly involving various professional occupations such as sheet metal workers, cutting, stamping, metal cutting, welding, heat treatment, surface treatment, riveting, installation, etc.

Since sheet metal processing mostly involves the processing of raw materials in a cold or hot state while not changing their cross-sectional features, such as metal plates, profiles, and pipes, etc., plastic deformation occurs below the recrystallization temperature of the processed metal, and therefore no chips are generated.

Choosing sheet metal processing can produce various products with different shapes, sizes, and functions. The steel structure products produced have high strength and stiffness, which can fully utilize their carrying capacity.

In the process of sheet metal structure fabrication, the various parts that compose the structure can be assembled and installed into a component using various connection methods such as welding, riveting, bite welding or expansion connection according to a certain orientation, dimensional and accuracy requirements, making the design more flexible.

Key Characteristics of Sheet Metal Manufacturing

Based on the above analysis, sheet metal manufacturing mainly has the following characteristics:

  • Compared with forge and casting production and processing, sheet metal components have the advantages of lightweight, metal material saving, simple processing technology, reduced production costs, and saved production costs.

  • Sheet metal components processed by welding have low processing accuracy and large welding deformation, so the deformation and correction amount after welding is large.

  • Welded joints are not disassembled, which makes it difficult to repair. Therefore, reasonable installation methods and installation procedures should be adopted to reduce or avoid waste. For large or extra-large products, on-site installation is usually required. Therefore, trial installation should be carried out in the factory first, and removable connections should be temporarily used to replace non-removable connections during the trial installation.

  • During the installation process, product quality often needs to be ensured through selection, adjustment, repeated measurement, and inspection.
